The region is made up of
Rome capital of the region and capital of Italy, and by the provinces of
Latina,
Frosinone,
Viterbo and
Rieti.
The ==Vatican=?=, an autonomous state, is located inside the city of Rome.
The history of the region parallels the history of
Rome, founded in the 8th century B.C. , and of the
Vatican.
Latium (
Latium vetus) was made up of only the territories that the
Latini civilization occupied. It was later extended to the territories inhabited by the
Ernici,
Volsci and
Equi. At the beginning of the Roman civilization, during the legendary
seven kings of Rome, the
Etruscans were the ones who took over the government and influenced culture, politics and social life of the new born region.
From the 6th century to the 1st century B.C. Rome’s government was a
Republic, until the proclamation of
Julius Cesar dictator for life in 45 a.C.
In the Imperial Age, with
Ottaviano Augusto (end of the 1st century B.C.), the regions of Latium and
Campania became the first Italic regions.
In the Paleocristian Age the ??????
In the 5th century, Rome and the entire region of Latium were invaded by the barbaric tribes, and the sovereignty over the territories went to
Costantinopolis, that meanwhile had become a strong political and economic centre for the Eastern Roman Empire.
The church enhanced its power in the 8th century, thanks to the donation of the
Castel of Sutri to the
Pope by the Longobard king
Liutprando in 1728.
The apogee of the church’s power comes about in the 13th century with
Innocenzo III and ends with
Bonifacio VIII, who in 1300 organized the first
Jubilee. From 1309 to 1377 the pope’s residence was transferred to
Avignon in
Provence and only after, the
Church state was reorganized militarily and politically.
Only during the “Italian Risorgimento” the power of the church, under the papacy of
Pius IX, was slowly subtracted from the pope himself and territories such as Emilia, Romagna, Marche, Umbria and Latium became a part of the new born reign of Italy. All this thanks to the march on Rome in 1870, that also made it the
capital>/b> of the reign in 1871.
