Archaeological Museum of Metaponto

Archaeological Museum of Metaponto
The Matapontion tabletsMetaponto was an important Greek colony where Phythagoras, the famous mathematician and philosopher of the VI century B.C., stayed for a time. The wealth of the remains of the territory which beautifully faces the Ionian Sea can be seen through the archaeological excavations and the important local museum.
The best-known piece is the so-called Palatine tablets, or the fifteen Doric columns belonging to a temple of which only the basement, in other words the columns, remain.
Within the museum splendid pieces are on display: vases, funeral pieces, a magnificent collection of jewellery and women’s ornaments
