The so-called Crucifix Procession that takes place on Maundy Thursday in Castiglione di Garfagnana is particularly suggestive. Numerous Apostles, Roman soldiers, and confraternal members wearing hoods participate in the candlelight procession. But the most impressive figure is the bare-footed, chained Christ. His true identity is a mystery as he, too, is hooded and is even locked in a closet the night before to preserve his anonymity!
This very particular celebration offers a good opportunity to visit the town and appreciate its fresh air and flavourful local cuisine.
