National park of the Sibillini Mountains

National park of the Sibillini Mountains
The park, established in 1993 with an area of about 70,000 hectares, encompasses beauty, incredible panoramas, interesting architecture and geology. There are many peaks in the area that exceed 2000 m, altitudes where the alpine star grows. Mountains like the Vettore, Sibilla and Redentore offer magnificent views of the surroundings of the park. In the park there is a sense of mystery that derives from the Sibilla legend of the cadaver of Pontius Pilate (which is said to have been brought mysteriously to the shores of the lake of the same name) and by the presence of Norcia, hometown of Saint Benedict. Among the municipalities in the area there is the great town of Visso, said to have been built centuries before Rome. Among the park’s fauna, animals such as the marmot, royal eagle, royal owl, peregrine falcon, Orsini viper and the very rare Marchesoni chirocephalus, a small mollusc that lives by itself in the Pilato lake.
