This is one of the most interesting
naturalistic areas in Tuscany, and in fact in Italy, with typical
alpine morphology. Environmental diversity has created an incredible faunistic, floristic and vegetational
variety while
erosion has led to extraordinarily beautiful phenomena such as the Karstic complex of mount
Corchia, the
Grotte del Vento caves and the
abysses (
Roversi reaches 1200 m in depth). Important archaeological finds (
Grotta di Equi,
Grotta all’Onda) reveal human presence in the area as far back at the
Paleolithic period. The climate, flora and fauna are markedly diversified depending on elevation and slope face (toward the sea or toward
Garfagnana). In particular, rare alpine species are present (the
Alpuan fern and the
alpine crow, a plant and a bird, respectively, are the symbols of the park). Also present in the park, the
golden eagle, the
peregrine falcon and shy alpine
hoofed animals, such as the
mufflon, which can rarely be viewed up close.
